When Do Decorations Come Down?

Lol, our Christmas decorations came down after Christmas lunch yesterday. Is that too soon? At your house, when do decorations come down?

We take everything down once we have opened up all the gifts, have taken all the photos, have carbed-up with food, and have transitioned into “pick-up” mode where trash is getting thrown away and boxes taken apart.

This is the best timing for me because everyone is still home instead of being out and about, or haven’t yet snuck off to the privacy of their rooms to do their own thing, so I have help. If I miss this golden opportunity, then I’ll be stuck doing the bulk of it myself. And I don’t want that!

We finished putting away all our decorations including the Christmas tree (a fake one that we re-use every year) within 30 minutes bc I had 4 people helping with their undivided attention and effort. And I didn’t do too much of the work either bc I was supervising where everything belongs. Very effective.

I’m really happy it’s done and not on my to-do list anymore! But I’m wondering if anyone else does it this early? Or is it weird?

  1. Seems a little quick, but I think you’re on to something. Getting everyone to help is the way to go for sure. I usually wait til after New Years, no idea why.

    1. Oh it’s definitely too quick, I agree! But I might not have help again for a long time. Since we keep the same tree for each year, I need help moving it to the attic. And I can’t do that by myself. And after Christmas, everyone’s rarely together at the same time again, or if so, certainly not in a mood to be helpful in any way. So that’s my only chance. I hope your Christmas was lovely! πŸ™‚

  2. We are never at home for Christmas (visiting the family in Texas) so we avoid this issue.
There are upwards of 30 people gathered there so we can slip out unnoticed. We can be 200 miles away before they even notice that we are gone.

    1. Oh I grew up outside of Houston so I have family to visit there too! πŸ™‚ You have the best scenario by visiting – not much preparation and not much cleaning-up for you! Just the travelling, but some people (like me!) enjoy the travel part. Hope you had a great time there! πŸ™‚

  3. Wow, that is quick! We tend to do I think about 12 days after Christmas πŸ˜‚ I always like tidying up as we go on Christmas, so all rubbish in the bin, food organised, etc, but the decs stay up a while. Too exhausting to get them all back down! At least you’re well prepared to enter the NY with a tidy home and no worries about cleaning all the stuff away. x

    1. Oh yes, I woke up with no worries and with nothing to do this morning! Lol, I still don’t have anything to do and we’re all eating leftovers so no cooking for me either. It kinda feels good! I hope you had a great Christmas! πŸ™‚

  4. I put the Hanukkah decorations rights after the last candle was lit❀️. Hey at least there is New Years celebrating to do πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰

  5. We’re at the opposite extreme β€” we leave the tree and most of the decorations up for way too long. I think the latest we ever took everything down was in July.

    1. Lol if you make it to July, might as well just leave them for the upcoming holidays anyway. :). Because we keep the tree in the attic each year, I can’t do it by myself. One year I didn’t have help until the end of February so everything stayed up until then. That’s why I make everyone help me before they leave Christmas day lol.

  6. We take stuff down in January 2, though I admit I washed the holiday table runner and hand towels in anticipation of being put away
