You Don’t Have to Be Pretty Like Her

You Don't Have to be Pretty Like Her

“You Don’t Have to be Pretty Like Her / Be Pretty Like You” is my new favorite quote.

I found this quote because I was feeling bad about myself and I wanted to find something to inspire me otherwise. I tried to find the original author so I could properly quote them. Most search results said the author was Anonymous, but I did find one result that said the original author was a YouTube/Instagram influencer named Desi Perkins. Just in case that’s true, I want to give her credit for it.

See, I had wanted to post a cute photo of myself to Instagram and I just couldn’t bring myself to do it because I lacked the confidence in how I look. I had a goal this year too, of trying to improve my confidence in my appearance because I already knew it was in a slump due to all my lifestyle changes during lockdown, and I posted about it here. I’m at 0% with making any progress on this goal.

So before all our snow melted today, I dressed-up a little bit and tried to take some cute pics in the snow. I seriously took HUNDREDS of pics. And when I reviewed them afterwards, I hated every single one of them. I kept finding imperfections with myself like:

  • I have a double-chin
  • There’s a shadow over my face
  • My smile is creepy
  • My braid isn’t over my shoulder like it’s supposed to be
  • I have closed fists
  • That spot of sunlight on my face looks like a huge cystic zit
  • I am grimacing
  • My pose is awkward
  • I look too short
  • etc, etc, etc

This literally happened with every.single.pic I took.

And my confidence truly took a beating from it.

Below is a glimpse into what my camera roll looked like. And I was unsatisfied with each one, for a million different reasons.

I know exactly why I do it too. Because I’m on Instagram alot and I see amazingly gorgeous pics of other women all day long. And instead of telling myself that “you don’t have to be pretty like her”, I compare myself to them and I start telling myself that I can’t compete. There’s no possible way.

But why is it a competition to me? Just because other women are beautiful, doesn’t mean I can’t be beautiful too. We are all unique in a variety of ways, and striving to look exactly like everyone else doesn’t highlight our uniqueness at all. And maybe it’s our uniqueness that is beautiful.

How do I stop comparing myself to them then? I don’t know how to stop unfortunately, so I don’t have any words of wisdom to share with you. But at least I know that’s my root cause. Do any of you have this issue too? How do you deal with it?

And that’s when I started searching for some inspiration otherwise to help get me out of my funk, and I found the quote: “You don’t have to be pretty like her. Be pretty like you.”

Maybe if I keep saying enough times, I’ll start to believe it. 🙁

Fun Wine Giveaway for Valentine’s Day

Wine Giveaway for Valentine's Day

It’s about time for me to do another giveaway! This time it’s a Wine Giveaway for Valentine’s Day! The entry form is at the bottom of this post, so make sure to enter the drawing before you leave.

I don’t believe the entry form appears in the WordPress Reader app which I use all the time; but it should appear on the actual post on the live website instead. If you know a trick to make it appear in the Reader app, please let me know.

The story as to why I do this particular type of giveaway has already been posted here if you wanted to check-out my original giveaway post. But for a really quick summary, I can do that too:

I have a friend that sells Scout & Cellar wines. I want to support her. But I also don’t enjoy wine personally. So I’ve been purchasing from her (to be a supportive friend) but to buy as gifts for other people who would actually enjoy it. So it’s a bit of a win-win for me, because I’m usually stumped as to what gifts to buy for others anyway. It was definitely my go-to gift over the holidays.

But definitely enter if this is a gift you’d enjoy. The last day to enter is this-coming Sunday February 14th – which is why this is named my Wine Giveaway for Valentine’s Day! I’ll announce the winner on this blog the next day Monday, as well as email them directly.

There are 4 eligibility requirements to be able to win; they are listed below on the entry form. So be sure to review them before entering to make sure you can receive the prize. 🙂

The last time I did this type of giveaway, samosaswmimosas was our winner! You can check out her Instagram by clicking on her name. And she was kind enough to send me a photo of what she received. I used it as the featured pic on this post.

Anyhow, that’s all the scoop I have about this. I wish you all good luck! And if you’re not eligible for this specific prize, I’m on the lookout for a different type of prize to offer in the future with a wider reach. So just stay tuned!

If you know someone who would like to enter this Wine Giveaway for Valentine’s Day, please feel free to point them in this direction.

Good luck!

My Luxurious First Class Boeing Dreamliner Flight

    Boeing Dreamliner Flight

I was lucky enough to find myself on a Boeing Dreamliner flight in 2019 due to a business trip, from Los Angeles to Beijing. I was even luckier to find myself in 1st class seating too! That never happens to me, except I was travelling with executives that were absolutely MORTIFIED that they would be in the same company as an employee in Economy Class and they made me change seating at the last minute.

    I was ok with that.

I went online to look-up some facts I could share with you about this plane, and I found that Boeing actually encourages people to post their stories about flying on this aircraft, and to use the hashtag #Dreamliner. And the most recent posts appear on their official Boeing Dreamliner site! I’m going to try exactly that when I promote this post on my social media, and then I’ll stalk their website to see if my post appears there. It’ll be so cool, if so! If you have a story to share about your Boeing Dreamliner flight, you should try it too!

So I don’t have a photo of it, but the seats recline almost flat so this is the ONLY flight I was able to fall asleep on. I definitely cannot sleep on a flight otherwise. And I’ve tried absolutely everything I can think of to fall asleep on an overnight flight. I’ve tried alcohol, sleeping pills, sleep deprivation ahead of time, etc but nothing has worked until I experienced these reclining seats. Brilliant. My problem must’ve been positioning, because I had no problem at all on this flight.

One really cool thing that I’ve never experienced before, was their windows! You control how much light they let in! But there aren’t any physical shades to pull down. You have a magic button that gradually allows light in or not, just like a dimmer switch. But on the window. I was obsessed with this feature when I first discovered it, because I could not figure out how in the world it worked. I didn’t call it a magic button for no reason.

Another thing I appreciated about being in first-class on this flight, was the unlimited alcoholic beverages. It just really helped to relieve the boredom a little bit and also helped to relieve the physical confinement of being in a small space for such a long period of time.

And the meals were pretty good too. I’m not sure how they were prepared, but they didn’t taste like the normal microwaved meals that I usually have on airplanes. I actually enjoyed these meals. And you cannot minimize how much of a difference it makes, to actually have a tray large enough to fit everything comfortably. It’s stressful having to balance your entire meal on a crammed tray that is too small. So I was incredibly delighted to not have that problem finally.

And I watched a TON of Zac Efron movies too. Some more than once. Some of his movies I paused and rewinded several times. I think his movie that I watched the most was “Baywatch” and “17 Again”. I like the no-brainer movies when I’m travelling, because I have a hard time concentrating while I’m flying for some reason so anything that requires brain power for me to follow-along just doesn’t work for me.

But I digress. It truly is a beautiful plane and their first-class experience was quite impressive for me. Have any of you been on one yet?

7 Things to do Instead of Watching the SuperBowl

7 Things to do Instead of Watching the SuperBowl

What are you all planning to do during the SuperBowl? I’ll be doing at least 1 thing out of my list of “7 Things To Do Instead of Watching the SuperBowl” tomorrow night.

I’m not going to watch it because it just doesn’t interest me. Lol, I don’t even enjoy the commercials or the half-time shows. Am I weird?

My additional problem is that my regularly-scheduled programming for Sunday night is “90 Day Fiance” and they are NOT airing a new episode tomorrow night so now my routine is totally ruined. And I love my routine.

So I’m sitting here now and trying to create a list of things to do instead of watching the SuperBowl tomorrow:

    1. Watch a movie. I spent some time this afternoon searching cable TV for a free movie that I could go ahead and record now, and then watch later commercial-free by fast-forwarding. I did find a couple Lifetime movies that I haven’t seen yet and I’ve recorded them so I’m ready tomorrow night if I need them.
    2. Meal-Prep. I can go ahead and cook a family meal for Monday night or Tuesday night during the SuperBowl. And then I can easily re-heat them later in the next couple of days. If I do that, I’ll have to decide on a recipe soon because I still need to buy groceries.
    3. Blog or Blog-Related Social Media. This actually might be the option I choose for myself. I do have difficulty finding the time to dedicate to my blog, so I might spend tomorrow night catching-up.
    4. Laundry. Lol, yes you read that right. I’d rather do laundry than watch the SuperBowl.
    5. Pick-Up the House. I always put-off this task at home because I live with monsters that leave all their stuff out and never put anything back where it belongs. To give you an example of how out of control they are… they don’t even SHUT cabinets they’ve opened. Monsters, lol. So no matter how hard I try to keep the house straight, it just feels like a futile effort for me. I’m so defeated. But maybe while they’re distracted with the SuperBowl, I can enjoy a few hours of organization.
    6. Catch-Up on Some Friendships. I could initiate some text conversations with friends I’ve lost touch with during the pandemic. If they reply back, I’ll be able to engage and catch-up with them. If they don’t reply back, it’s ok. At least I tried.
    7. Taxes. I think all my 2020 statements and W2s have finally arrived in the mail, so I technically could do this. But I really don’t want to. Lol, I’ll be really desperate tomorrow night if I end-up doing this. Maybe I’ll just prep for it or something.

Anyway, I’m sure I’ll find someway to keep busy, and find things to do instead of watching the SuperBowl. What will you be doing tomorrow night? Whatever you do, I hope you enjoy it! 🙂

    Get to Know Me Better

    Get to Know Me Better

Happy Wednesday! I’ve been a bit stumped lately as to what to write about so I figured I’d chat about myself a bit and let you all get to know me better.

Let’s see… I was born in Singapore. But I’ve lived in the United States most of my life. I’ve lived in California, Texas, and now in Tennessee. I think I enjoyed living in Texas the best, where everything is just bigger and better. 🙂

I just got my U.S. citizenship last year.

I have a 9 year old daughter who is incredibly smart and athletic, with a ton of friends. She’s definitely the complete opposite of me. Every weekend the neighborhood kids knock on our door for her to play and I’m so happy she’s included and so active. Otherwise, she’d be on her iPad or watching YouTube all day so I’m especially thankful for her friendships.

I have sleep issues. One major problem is anxiety. If I’m stressed or worried about something then I just lie there all night feeling my heart pumping like crazy bc I can’t turn-off all the thoughts in my head. Another problem is that I used to think my house was haunted and I would “see” things in the dark while I was trying to sleep. So I would keep the tv on all night to prevent that which also messed up my sleeping.

My parents are retired. My mom has survived cancer 3x so she’s the strongest person I know. But it also gives me fear that she’s compromised if she gets sick again. She’s definitely not 100% like she used to be prior to cancer. She’s probably around 60% of her former self now.

Hm I’m not sure what else… I hope the small amount of info I’ve posted here helps you get to know me better. Do you have any tidbits about yourself you’d like to share with me?
